Strike 3 Foundation helps pediatric program

Craig Breslow, a relief pitcher for the Oakland Athletics and a Yale University graduate, founder of the Strike 3 Foundation, was selected as a finalist for the Roberto Clemente Award, presented to a player whose commitment to the community sets him apart. Breslow’s Strike 3 Foundation, inspired by his sister Lesley’s frightening bout and surviving from pediatric thyroid cancer at a young age, raises money to help battle the disease, including a goal of raising half a million dollars for the Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Program.

The foundation’s third annual First Pitch Celebrity Gala, benefitting pediatric research, will be held on Nov. 13 at the Stamford Hilton.

The gala gets underway at 6:30 p.m. and features live entertainment, and both live and silent auctions. The event dress is cocktail attire.

This year’s First Pitch Gala will be hosted by Bobby Valentine (former MLB player and manager and current ESPN analyst) and Karl Ravech (host of ESPN’s Baseball Tonight and SportsCenter).

Other celebrity guests (subject to change) include Breslow, Andrew Bailey, Jack Cust, Rajai Davis, and Vin Mazzaro from the Oakland A’s, Minnesota Twins pitcher Kevin Slowey, WWE Superstars, and Boston Red Sox radio announcer Joe Castiglione.

The Roberto Clemente Award recognizes the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and positive contribution to their team.

Over the past year, Breslow has raised close to $150,000 for childhood research and education through fund-raising events for his Strike 3 Foundation.

These fund-raising events include the foundation’s annual Gala held each year in Connecticut, a number of smaller networking events during the off-season, a wine-tasting art event in San Francisco in July, a blackjack fund-raiser in the bay area in August, and a luncheon at Yankee Stadium this past month.

In addition, 10% of the proceeds from the A’s 2010 Community Fund Golf Classic were donated to the Strike 3 Foundation.

Since its creation in 2008, Breslow’s Strike 3 Foundation has raised more than $220,000 in an effort to heighten awareness, mobilize support and raises funds for childhood cancer research.
