Strike 3 event a home run for charity

Justin Upton and other Diamondbacks spent Wednesday night fielding drink orders instead of pop-flys at the second Celebrity Bartending Night, hosted by Craig Breslow’s Strike 3 Foundation.

"I think people like me more than the regular bartenders because I make heavier drinks. They don’t have to come back as many times," said Upton of his mixology skills.

Craig Breslow has brain, brawn for Diamondbacks

For the record, Craig Breslow is not packing a slide rule in his shirt pocket. (I checked.) He chooses not to hang his multi-syllable Yale degree in his locker and opts not go all molecular biophysics during this interview.

He is, quite frankly, low-key and unassuming and appears to have checked his Ivy League education at the Diamondbacks clubhouse door.

Bailey hits lanes to strike out pediatric cancer

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. — Andrew Bailey declined to make a joke about throwing strikes, even as he stood in a bowling alley. Turns out, he’s not much of a bowler.

"I’m just trying not to fall down," the Red Sox new closer said Saturday, as he hosted the first Bailey Bowl at Pinsetter Bar & Bowl in South Jersey, where he grew up.

The Bailey Bowl benefits the Strike 3 Foundation, which supports pediatric-cancer research and assists the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania. Bailey was more than the event’s spokesperson and host. With the help of friends and family, he took an active role in throwing the event — putting together an auction of sports memorabilia and lining up celebrities to appear, including manager Bobby Valentine. Valentine has been involved with the Strike 3 Foundation for several years, and knew Bailey only in passing. They figure to get much better acquainted, now that they’ll be working together in Boston. Oakland’s Bailey pitching a different ball

Andrew Bailey is admittedly nervous. Not because this is the Oakland A’s right-hander’s first time as an arbitration-eligible player.

Neither is he sweating very much about the lengthy list of trade rumors to which his name is linked.

No, Bailey, a graduate of Paul VI and a former American League Rookie of the Year and two-time all-star, is hosting the first major charitable event near his hometown of Haddon Heights.

A’s gather to help Breslow’s foundation

OAKLAND — Craig Breslow and his Strike 3 Foundation hit one out of the park Tuesday when they presented a $25,000 grant to Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland.

Breslow, two-time A’s All-Star closer Andrew Bailey — the foundation’s developmental director — and with several other teammates and their significant others presented the check in the Atrium of Children’s Hospital’s Outpatient Center. The grant will fund two new programs within the hospital’s psychology oncology program — a teen cancer support program and a siblings program, both of which will help with the counseling and therapy sides of cancer treatment. Breslow looks to make a difference off the field

NEW YORK — Craig Breslow, a 26th-round Draft choice in 2002 by the Brewers, has been released once, plus waived three times and, despite it all, is in his sixth season pitching in the Major Leagues. That’s quite the life lesson — which he insists should never be confused with life-and-death lessons.

His Strike 3 Foundation has raised more than $600,000 in three years to fight pediatric cancers. Even during the baseball season, Breslow makes certain he spends at least an hour a day on the foundation, planning, calling, and answering emails at 3 a.m. after the next flight to the next city. Yet through all that heavy lifting, the A’s lefty insists he is ultimately the one lifted. Read the full story here »
